How could a 75-year old woman defeat President Donald Trump (yes, he was President of the United States at the time!) in court? E. Jean Carroll tells her fascinating story in detail, including quoting court transcripts in Not My Type.
E. Jean Carroll is a high-profile person in her own right. She wrote the "Ask E. Jean" column in Elle magazine for 27 years. She is the author of five books and has written for Rolling Stone, Outside, Vanity Fair, Playboy, Esquire, New York, and The Atlantic. She was named one of Time's Most Influential People in the World in 2024. She was also the host of the Ask E. Jean cable talk show.
In either the fall of 1995 or the spring of 1996, Ms. Carroll had an encounter with Donald Trump. They had met once before at a network television party during 1987. At the time of the party, Ms. Carroll was married to John Johnson, a network television writer and producer. She "ran into" Donald Trump at Bergdorf Goodman, a luxury retail specialty store. Donald Trump wasn't a celebrity at the time. They started flirting with each other and Donald Trump asked Ms. Carroll to help him select lingerie as a gift for his wife. They went into a dressing room, where he sexually assaulted her.
In June 2019, Trump was running for President and Ms. Carroll decided she had to tell the nation his true character, so she accused him of rape. On social media, Donald Trump said she was lying, so Ms. Carroll filed a defamation lawsuit during November 2019. The criminal statute of limitations had passed, so her lawsuit against Trump was a civil trial.
Throughout her trials, Donald Trump continued to vilify her on Twitter and Truth Social. He claimed he didn't even know her.
To have an idea how attractive she was as a young woman, E. Jean Carroll was Miss Indiana University in 1963 and Miss Cheerleader USA in 1964. At age 75, Ms. Carroll knew a jury wouldn't believe she was attractive enough for Trump to attack. A considerable effort was made to improve her appearance and for her to dress attractively for the trial. Her attorneys made exhaustive preparations for the trial, including making their arguments to test juries to find out what their verdict would be. Expert witnesses testified huge damages from Trump's online tirades.
The evidence for the trial included a photograph of Donald and Ivanka Trump, E. Jean Carroll and John Johnson at the party. Trump claimed he didn't recognize Ms. Carroll, but he did recognize John Johnson and vaguely remembered the party. Later, Trump was shown a photograph of Ms. Carroll when she was young. Although he had previously said, "She's not my type!", Trump said, "That's Marla, yeah. That's my wife." (Marla Maples was his second wife.)
After losing the first trial, Trump continued to claim Ms. Carroll was a liar, so she filed and won a second trial.
You'll be glad when you read this story of extraordinary courage, Not My Type.
