There are scores of books about Personal Magnetism.
I think most of us would like for other people to be attracted to us.
What kind of person are we attracted to?
When you think about it, isn’t it a person who greets you with a warm smile and radiates happiness?
Zig Ziglar used to say he was looking for people like that in his audience. He wasn’t looking for the type of person who “brightens up a room by leaving it”; people who look like “someone licked all the red off their candy.” He was looking for people who gave an encouraging smile!
Kat Norton, also known as “Miss Excel”, is a wonderful example. She always glows with a beautiful smile on her videos, which has made her a champion marketer selling Microsoft Excel training on TikTok. She comes off as super-friendly and fun. Someone you’d love to know better. Someone who can make a complex subject easy and fun! (Kat says she worked hard to habitually have a cheerful smile.)
If you’re like me, you might be inclined to be pretty serious. It might actually take some work to develop a happy, sunny outlook. There are so many things to worry about, like global warming and the political conflict in our country. Possibly your finances aren’t the best, or your relationship is on the rocks. These are serious issues, but you won’t develop much Personal Magnetism by dwelling on them and being a chronic complainer.
Think of the things that you are thankful for. Make a “gratitude list”. Refer to it daily. Yes, this is a “Pollyanna” approach. Remember how beloved Pollyanna became in her community? I’m thankful for my wife of almost 52 years, Janet, who greets me in the morning and the evening with a beautiful smile.
Don’t make this a secret. Recruit your family and friends to help you. (Otherwise, they’ll wonder what’s going on!) “I’m working on improving my attitude by smiling more. Please help me by asking me if everything is OK when I don’t smile.”
Practice smiling in a mirror.
You might be pleasantly surprised with how your family and friends respond. You also should be pleasantly surprised with how your customers and, if you’re an employee, your boss respond.
Give it a try for a month. Pull this article out occasionally and read it again as a reminder.
It certainly can’t hurt, and it might change your life!
