Helping small business owners develop extraordinary businesses that really work for their customers, their employees, themselves and their families

“The Secret” in marketing communications

When you want to get someone’s attention for a marketing communication, it’s hard to beat including two magic words, “The Secret”, in your headline.

For example, “The Secret healthy way I lost 40 pounds and added 10 years to my life expectancy (and you can, too)!”

It’s human nature that curiosity drives us to know a secret that someone else knows.

We believe information may be hidden from us that keeps us from realizing a result we are seeking or the life of our dreams.

As a business owner, realize that what is “old hat” or everyday knowledge to you may be “new” or a “secret” to your customers.

Isn’t this the case when we consult a medical doctor? Doctors have “secret” specialized knowledge that they use every day that their patients seek to cure their illnesses.

In other words, it is perfectly legitimate for you to call information that you have that may not be widely known a “secret”, even though you might be a plumber or an electrician!

If you know something your customer doesn’t, it’s a “secret” until you share it.

So when you are sending a marketing communication and it seems appropriate, test a headline that includes “The Secret”.
